When I was young my father, an ex-Royal Navy man, encouraged me to build many Airfix ships. I thoroughly enjoyed every one but my interest fell away during my teens. Nevertheless, I have always enjoyed seeing well-made models of all kinds. My interest in Spitfires was firmly established on seeing the “Battle of Britain” film in 1969. Occasional visits to airshows followed along with much reading. As retirement neared, I decided to make a model Spitfire of my own and was soon hooked. I saw a display by the Club at the first model show I visited and made the good decision to join.
